02/11/2014 – Cherries

With this painting, I really wanted to work on making the colors clear and vibrant. I think I accomplished that – particularly with the red colors in the cherries. The background is a bit blotchy and weird, and some of the lines could be crisper, but overall I’m pretty happy with how this came out.

I’ve been having trouble figuring out how to keep my paint from looking blotchy, muddy and overworked. In this piece, I put the lights in first, then added the darks, saving the midtones for the end. That seemed to keep the colors looking crisper and brighter than other techniques I have tried. It also seemed to make it easier to judge which colors I needed to use to create the right level of contrast. I’m definitely going to continue doing that in future paintings.
