02/06/2014 – Girl Picking Flowers

Beth

I’m still working on my goal of learning to paint in a looser style. I like the idea of being able to suggest form through lights and darks instead of by painting every detail. I think I accomplished this to some degree in the girl’s hair and face.

I wasn’t planning on putting a large flower in the front, but it seemed to fit with the background wash. I like the front flower on its own, and I like the girl on her own, but I don’t necessarily love them together.  To me, it almost looks like the girl and the large flower are the same size, rather than the flower being in the foreground and the girl being in the background. In hindsight, I think I should have add more flowers/foliage in between to give a greater sense of depth. A subtle horizon line also may have helped.

Despite the few things I would change, I had a lot of fun painting this. I really enjoy working in a looser style without sketching anything out beforehand. It’s fun to build up the forms with shapes and color rather than filling in pre-drawn lines on the page.
